Future of Sarbanes-Oxley Act
by Robert Bell
06/20/2009

The purpose of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act was to curb the tendency amongst big corporate to play with public money and one fine morning file for bankruptcy and then the game of pointing fingers would start leaving the poor investor in the lurch.

The growth of the accounting scandals and growing abuse of the loose public reporting of financial accounts led may companies to swindle billions of public money and file bankruptcy. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act has emerged as a nightmare for the companies getting their accounts audited for almost all the companies but no one is questioning the need of having such a law. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act came into force in 2002 and due to its complex nature the financial statements of almost all the companies were delayed beyond the normal period. Huge amount of paper work was generated. All other IT projects were stopped midway as the existing ones were needed to be made SOX compliant. The implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act delayed a huge number of

by Robert Bell
06/20/2009

Wind has an amazing strength; from mild spring zephyrs to mighty tornados, wind can cause damage, set a boat sailing or cool tropical areas. Now, thanks to advances in technology, wind can also power anything from a single home to large residential areas and beyond.

The number of companies interested in better ways to harvest the wind is rising, as is the number of those interested in wind turbines for their home. Why would a homeowner go to all the cost and trouble of buying and installing a wind turbine when there are all these electrical companies lying around? Here are some of the facts and benefits:

Cost and Payback

When considering whether to install a wind turbine in a residential area, cost is one of the main concerns, and rightly so. Not too long ago, small turbines could cost anywhere from $6,000 to $22,000 to be installed. Again, thanks to fantastic technology, some turbines cost as little as $1000, tower included.

California could be trying to get rid of some of its most popular landmarks?
by Robert Bell
06/20/2009

The state of California is all but bankrupt, with a $24 billion budget deficit. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that something has to be done to mend the problem and his plan called for the sale of some of Californias most admired landmarks.

On the block would be San Quentin State Prison, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and the California State Fairgrounds.

The governor said that the sale of these landmarks as well as four others and eleven office buildings around the state could raise $3 billion for the state. This would help out the budget after the proposed cuts in education, welfare, parks, and health care are passed through.

Unfortunately, it could take years to complete sales of these sites. That means that it would do nothing for the immediate problems the budget deficit is causing. The other problem with the sale of the real estate is the downturn in the Californian real estate market.

SAS-70 Benefits
by Robert Bell
06/20/2009

Benefits accruing to the Service Organization The Service organizations getting the SAS-70 audits done receive significant benefits from having a SAS-70 audit performed. The Service Auditor's Report usually with an unqualified opinion which is issued by an Independent Audit Firm puts the service organization in a different league from its peers by establishing that it has more effectively designed internal control objectives and activities. A Service Auditor's Report allows the service organization to build trust with its customer user organizations.

Unless a SAS-70 audit has been undertaken at a service organization it may have to entertain and receive audit requests from its multiple customers together from their respective auditors. Such multiple requests followed by visits from multiple user auditors can create a lot of administrative problems at the service organization's level. Most of the service organizations need to engage a professional firm to conduct a pre-assessment check against the recommended internal controls to check if the organization is fully ready for an independent audit. How does a service organization disclose the internal controls which have been implemented in the organization to its customers who require a reliable report on the effectiveness of the internal controls practiced by the service organization? The audit report under SAS-70 fulfills this requirement. Haven't we all heard that silly expression? The saying isn't that silly and actually has some interesting history behind it. There was an intelligent person who lived in a far away country who got this wild idea one day during the warm weather to stick socks on their feet instead of their ears.

Wow, wearing socks on your feet. The change from wearing socks on the head to the feet really created a whole new and exciting era in history. Let's stop kidding for a minute. Additional Security Measures
by Robert Bell
06/21/2009

Many guns have inbuilt security measures like gun locks, to prevent accidents. So keeping them in a gun safe is an added protection. However, owners of guns with locks face some typical problems. They prevent you from getting your gun quickly. After the occurrence of the crime, police get there in cases of home invasion. When someone breaks in you are on your own, if you are in an isolated are or in such an area where you can't call the police right away. You may not have time to lock up your gun the moment you need to, when your home is broken.

Some guns locks before it could be put on requires unloading. You may not have time to load your gun when you need it right away, if you have one of the above. In the view of the burglar, the gun may seem to be useless. Often just holding up the gun is enough to deter or scare criminals; even if it is not loaded it can protect you from coming to harm. One resoundingly negative consequence of the amazing advances in computing power over the last 25 or so years is the notion, still popular despite constant debunking, that all you need to be a designer today is to buy a computer (usually a Macintosh). When over-caffeinated pundits were first promoting the term "desktop publishing- in the mid-1980s, many said the new technology would result in so many great new print publications (this was before the Internet boom) that it would "put the First Amendment into overdrive.- What really happened, of course, is that entirely unqualified, untrained and untalented people got hold of a Mac, a LaserWriter and some software and proceeded to crank out a few metric tons of 300dpi landfill.

My, how judgmental, you may think. Oddly enough, for all the counterculture tendencies of some, artists in general are among the most judgmental and elitist folks around, and have no problem observing (and saying) that people are not "equal- when it comes

by Robert Bell

The other problem with the sale of the real estate is the downturn in the Californian real estate market.

by Robert Bell
